Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles can be found on residential homes in most of Florida. They are made from organic materials like asphalt and fiberglass. Asphalt shingles can come in different textured styles of roofs such as strip, dimensional, and premium. The most common type of asphalt shingle style is dimensional, with is a 2 layered shingle installation that can prevent damage to the roof. This roofing style can withstand hurricane winds up to 130 miles an hour. Dimensional shingles can last 20 to 30 years on your roof. But some higher end asphalt shingles can last 40 to 50 years.

Some disadvantages to asphalt shingles are that these roofs can withstand hurricane winds, but are vulnerable to UV damage, meaning the roof will wear down much faster. Asphalt shingles can come in six types to stand up to hurricane winds. Types A to D can withstand hurricane winds of 60 to 90 miles an hour. Types F to H can withstand hurricane winds up to 110 and 150 miles an hour. UV rays can cause the fiberglass in the asphalt shingles to shed, leaving the roof vulnerable to water damage. One great advantage about these roofs are being low to high maintenance and resistant to fire.

Asphalt shingles can come in multiple colors. Some standard shades are black and gray but these roofs can come in orange, brown, red or green depending on your preferred color of choice. These roofs can appear to look like wood or slate depending on your preferred style to add character to the home. Asphalt shingles also do not require any additional weight or structural changes to your roof because they are durable and lightweight.

The best thing about asphalt shingles are their ability to be recycled to make new shingles at the end of their use. These shingles can be used to also make asphalt for roads or streets, meaning less waste.

The life of an asphalt shingle roof depends on the replacement of shingles or the roof itself. Asphalt shingle roofs have a 5 to 10-year warranty and up to 15 years with routine maintenance and inspections. Roofs should be looked at every few months after a major storm and should be washed with a mixture of water and bleach to remove algae or mold. But asphalt shingles with an algae or mold resistant coating can be asked upon request.
